So much of life can be spent in a defended space, where we close off our emotions, focusing on not feeling, as a way of surviving and functioning in the world. Yet in relationships, the exact opposite is required. We need to be able to share our feelings and our tender side. This can become quite a balancing act, where we are one person at work and quite another with our nearest and dearest.
Often fear about being close to someone, and the possible rejection or abandonment, is what fuels our distancing. This can show itself in a few different ways, such as through controlling behaviour or avoidance.
