The Dark Side of Meditation

Can Mindfulness Make Us Ill?

Aaron Alexis was in search of something. He started attending 
a Buddhist temple and learned to meditate; he hoped it would bring him wisdom and peace. “I want to be a Buddhist monk,” he once told a friend from the temple. His friend advised him to keep studying. Aaron did. He learned Thai and kept going to the temple, chanting, and meditating. But then other things got in the way.

On 16 September 2013, Aaron drove into Washington’s Navy Yard. It was eight o’clock in the morning. He’d been working there not long before, and security let him in. He walked out
 of the car with a large bag and briefly disappeared into a toilet. Minutes later the security cameras caught him holding a shotgun. Aaron walked briskly and hid behind a wall for a few seconds before advancing through the building. Within 30 minutes twelve people were dead. He killed randomly, first using his shotgun and then, after running out of ammunition, using the handgun belonging to a guard he’d just killed. He died after an exchange of gunfire with the police.

It took only 24 hours for a journalist to notice that Aaron 
had been a Buddhist, prompting her to write an article that asked, ‘Can there be a less positive side to meditation?’ Western Buddhists immediately reacted. One wrote, “This man represented the Dharma teachings no more than 9/11 terrorists represented the teachings of Islam.”

The negative side to meditationCan there be a less positive side to meditation?

Others explained that he had a history of mental health problems. However, some noted that Buddhism, like other religions, has a history that links it to violence. And meditation, for all its de-stressing and self-development potential, can take you deeper into the darkest recesses of your own mind than you may have wished for.

This brings up questions I have wrestled with, both as a psychologist and in my own spiritual practice. Do I have unrealistic positive expectations about what meditation can do? Can it also have adverse effects, finding its way to non-spiritual, even non-peaceful ends?

Dark Recesses of The Mind

When something goes wrong, the way it did with Aaron Alexis, we can’t look the other way – rationalizing that he wasn’t a true Buddhist or meditator isn’t enough. We need to examine the less familiar, hidden facets of meditation – a technique that for centuries has been used to cultivate wisdom, clarity of mind, and selflessness. We need to ask ourselves if meditation has a dark side. I’d come across the idea that without the guidance of an expert teacher, meditation can have adverse effects, but I’d thought that this was a metaphor for the difficulties we might encounter as we venture deep into ourselves. I hadn’t considered that the adverse effects might be literal ones.

Meditation and Mental Health

Then, one day, I heard a first-hand account that opened my eyes to my naïvety. At the time, I was teaching an open course on the psychology of spirituality. There were a few twenty-year-olds, but the majority of students were in their late fifties and early sixties and represented a combination of retired lawyers, Anglican priests, psychiatrists, and three or four yoga and meditation teachers. Louise was one of them.

In her late fifties and lean with dark, short hair, Louise was a quiet member of the group, who – in general – spoke up only when she felt she had something important to say. She had taught yoga for more than twenty years, stopping only when something unexpected happened that changed her life forever. During 
one meditation retreat (she’d been on many), her sense of self changed dramatically. “Good,” she thought initially, “It must be part of the dissolving experience.” But she couldn’t help feeling anxious and frightened. “Don’t worry, just keep meditating and it will go away,” the meditation teacher told her. It didn’t.

She couldn’t get back to her usual self. The last day of the retreat was excruciating: her body shook, she cried and panicked. The following day, back at home, she was in pieces – her body was numb, she didn’t want to get out of bed. Louise’s husband took her to the GP and, within hours, she was being seen by a psychiatrist. She spent the next 15 years being treated for psychotic depression and for part of this time, she had to be hospitalized.

Louise had chosen to give a presentation on the 
psychology of spiritual experience, as part of her assessment 
on the course. She talked lucidly about her illness and its 
possible origins, including a genetic predisposition to mental health problems. She explained that she had gradually taken
 up yoga practice again, but had never returned to meditation retreats. “I had to have electroconvulsive therapy,” she told the class. That means strong electric shocks going through your skull; a treatment that is not only painful, but leads to memory loss in the short term.

Diving Too Deep

I was stunned. I looked through the medical and psychological databases in search of articles on the possible adverse effects of meditation. There were some, most of them case studies. One of the most striking, written in 2001 by a British psychiatrist, told the story of a 25-year-old woman who, like Louise, had a serious mental health problem following meditation retreats. The first time she was admitted to hospital her symptoms included:

Thought disorder with flight of ideas, her mood was elevated and there were grandiose delusions including the belief that she had some special mission for the world: she had to offer ‘undying, unconditional love’ to everyone. She had no [critical] insight.

This woman, referred to as Miss X, was diagnosed with mania. After six weeks of medication, her symptoms were controlled.
 A psychiatrist saw her regularly for two years and she started twice-weekly psychotherapy. Then, she took part in a Zen Buddhist retreat and was hospitalized again.

Adverse Experiences

Interesting, I thought, but I was still unconvinced. All these examples could be individuals with a strong predisposition to mental illness. As I looked further into the scientific literature though, I found other kinds of evidence. In 1992, David Shapiro, a professor in psychiatry and human behaviour at the University
 of California, Irvine, published an article about the effects of meditation retreats. Shapiro examined 27 people with different levels of meditation experience. He found that 63 percent of them had at least one negative effect and 7 percent suffered profoundly adverse effects. The negative effects included anxiety, panic, depression, increased negativity, pain, feeling spaced out, confusion and disorientation.

Perhaps only the least experienced felt these negative experiences. Several days of meditation might overwhelm those who were relatively new to the practice. Was that the case? The answer was no. When Shapiro divided the larger group into those with lesser and greater experience, there were no differences: all the meditators had an equal number of adverse experiences. An earlier study had arrived at a similar, but even more surprising conclusion. Not only did those with more experience of meditating find themselves with negative symptoms – particularly anxiety, confusion and restlessness – they also had considerably more adverse effects than the beginners.

Amid the small pile of articles on the adverse effects of meditation, I was surprised to find two by Arnold Lazarus and Albert Ellis, co-founders of CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). In a 1976 article, Lazarus reported that a few of his own patients had had serious disturbances after meditating; these included depression, ongoing tension and a serious suicide attempt. Lazarus strongly criticized the idea that ‘meditation is for everyone’. Instead, he argued that ‘one man’s meat is another man’s poison’, and that researchers and therapists need to know both the benefits and the risks of meditation for different kinds of people.

Albert Ellis shared Lazarus’ misgivings about meditation. He believed it could be used as a therapeutic tool, but not with everyone:

A few of my own clients have gone into dissociative semi-trance states and upset themselves considerably by meditating.

Overall, he believed meditation could be used only in moderation as a ‘thought-distracting’ or ‘relaxing’ technique.

The Dangers of Dissolution of Self

Razzaque is a London-based psychiatrist whose own 
Buddhist meditation practice has led him to re-evaluate the meaning of mental illness. He argues that many of the psychotic experiences his patients describe resemble mystical experiences of ego-dissolution that are known to occur after years of meditation practice.

Razzaque suggests that mental breakdowns are part of a spiritual-growth process, in which we learn to see the self for what it is – an illusion. He describes his own mystical experience in the book:

I found myself descending into a deeply meditative state;
 I somehow travelled through the sensations of my body and the thoughts in my mind to a space of sheer nothingness that felt, 
at the same time, like it was somehow the womb of everything. I felt a sense of pure power and profound energy as I came upon a sudden brilliant light and a profound feeling of all-pervading joy…I was everything and nothing at the same time.

In the days that followed, however, life wasn’t so blissful. Razzaque found that he couldn’t contain his joyful experience 
and there was something deep within, pulling him in the opposite direction.

I could sense the powerful currents in my whirling mind – the self-doubts and the dents in self-esteem sucking me towards a ball of depression, the anxieties and fears threatening to balloon into full-blown panic, obsessions or defensive compulsions, and the speed of it all that risked pushing me into a manic state.

A Psychotic Episode or Spiritual Experience?

Others before Razzaque have trodden a similar path and pointed out similarities between the symptoms of psychotic people and spiritual experiences. In the late 1980s, Stan Grof and his wife edited a book on spiritual emergencies. They caution clinical psychologists and psychiatrists to be aware of and respect what on the surface may look like mental illness, but is, in fact, the expression of spiritual experiences that are having a profound, though momentarily stressful, effect.

Their pioneering work came to fruition when a new category was added to the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DsM-IV), used by psychiatrists worldwide – that of religious and spiritual problems.

With a category of religious and spiritual problems, clinicians are potentially able to recognize what are genuine manic, depressive or psychotic episodes and what are the non-pathological, though sometimes difficult, effects of meditation. But it’s far from a straightforward distinction. David Lukoff, the clinical psychologist who co-authored this new category, admits that his interest in the topic arose in 1971, when he spent two months experiencing his own spiritual crisis – fully convinced that he was the reincarnation of Buddha and Christ, with a mission to save the world.

Meditation for personal growthDespite its dark side, meditation is a technique with true potential for personal change.

Repressed and traumatic material can easily resurface during intense meditation, which made me realize, with a sense of relief and humility, that meditation need not be a panacea to cure every ill, nor a tool to moral perfection. Perhaps we shouldn’t treat it very differently from prayer, which can quiet our minds, give us some comfort and lead us towards a deeper place, where we can explore 
who we are or be closer to God.

Tread Carefully on The Spiritual Path

Perhaps meditation was never supposed to be more than a tool to help with self-knowledge;
 one that could never be divorced from a strong ethical grounding of who we are and the world we live in. In Patanjali’s sutras, when
 he describes the various aspects of yoga, meditation is only one of them. The first one, the very basis of a healthy and eventual selfless being, is self-restraint (yama), which he defines as ‘non- violation, truthfulness, non-stealing, containment, and non-grasping’. And to be sure that these are the definite and non-debatable foundations he adds: these restraints are not limited by birth, time or circumstance; they constitute the great vow everywhere.

Only with this strong foundation, can the other limbs of yoga (as Patanjali calls them) emerge, including the asanas, pranayama, meditation and the blissful experiences of unity with the ground of being. Despite its dark side and the limitations of the current scientific research, I still think meditation is a technique with real potential for personal change, if properly guided and taught within a larger spiritual-ethical framework.

A fertile soil for the origin and persistence of problems could be the lack of philosophical, psychological and ethical foundation or insight (based on examination or investigation of the nature of things, the nature of experience and some basic, theoretical knowledge), therefore misinterpreted meditative experience occurring in devotional rapture or mystical trance.

    In the Buddhist system of mind development and meditation, a sort of basic method of the (Theravada) Abhidhamma methodology, is to proceed from what we might call, the scheme or the system of fundamental or ultimate realities: mental and material phenomena, and then use those ideas, those concepts as tools for interpreting and (right) understanding experienced reality.

    So instead of developing psychotic episodes in states of mystical trance and for example by misinterpreting the concept of reincarnation … making the right efforts to develop the noble qualities of the Buddha or Jesus could be the right practice.

  2. In Daoist practice, meditation is contraindicated for people with Shen (spirit) disturbances, i.e. mental illness. In particular people with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other disassociative disorders are to avoid meditation and pranayama (breath and qi circulation practices) as they can aggravate the condition (even if the person is medicated). (Note that these practices can cause medication to stop being effective as well.) Additionally, if you explore Vedanta there is an understanding that a “failed” kundalini awakening can result in psychological problems if the energy pathways have not been fully cleared before the energy/prana circulates up the shushumna. It is important to not try to force the Qi/prana through the micro-cosmic orbit or up the shushumna until the emotional/spiritual work of clearing past traumas has been done at a healthy pace or the attendant stagnant/blocked energy will present for processing and clearing all at once.
    Meditation is powerful. It causes increase and flow of energy. If the body isn’t ready, it can cause shortcircuits and burn outs.

    • I think that you have some kind of problems and watch too much television. Television is brainwash machine. Television causes alzheimer. Elite uses media to control us. You talk like some kind of doctor who dont know anythingt about meditation. I can meditate even 8 hours/ night or 2-3 hours day. Mediatation can fix even Parkinson´s disease and desperation. I am enlightened and here is one photo ( selfie ) about my aura. I am healer. I can send my rays even to other country and make my friend fell in sleep.     • I agree do not go for meditation if you are not willing to change your personalty. Your subconcioussnes your belives your perception of the world, all that may change, if you want to stay in the comfort zone, do not go for meditation.

  3. Thanks for this article. It is very important.

    For me, my anxiety preceeding the event and the extremes of a 10 day meditation retreat tipped me over into having a manic episode and becoming Bi Polar at age 39.

    While I was in recovery I met a couple of individuals who had been on buddhist meditation retreats and had tried to commit suicide.

    I attended the Vipassana retreat in Auckland. The facilitators were v scared when I became manic, they isolated me quickly and did not take responsibility for my care or well-being. It felt as you say, that they were sweeping the problem under the carpet.

    They tried to keep me at the retreat (but isolated) for the full 10 days even though I was having a manic episode halfway through the retreat. I had to convince them over and over that I had to leave (and I was manic!!). They didn’t organise for me to go to a hospital or anything. They just dropped me off at a bus stop miles from anywhere. I felt like I was going to die.

    My experience on the 10 day retreat was the scariest experience of my life, seeing hallucinations, feeling things under my skin (even hitting my head with a rock) and feeling like I was going to die. I had done lots of personal growth work and spiritual learning before going on the retreat, and had done lots of shorter meditations. My dad suffered from a mental illness but I just thought I suffered with anxiety – I didn’t think it would be enough to be concerning. Needless to say it was. That took away four years of my life with massive depression, barely able to work, massive loss of self confidence, getting bullied – it took over my life in every way imaginable. I’m not saying this to seek sympathy but just to share my experience with others who may be thinking whether going on a retreat is right for them.

    From my perspective, anyone conducting intense retreats like this need to take responsibility and care for the people attending their retreat and if an attendee shows signs of being mentally unstable they should be taken to a doctor or to the hospital. One would assume being buddhist, they would have care for life in all it’s forms (including their paying customers). I would call what I experienced on the retreat gross negligence. However, if they did bring people to mental health providers or the GP this would make clear to the public the damaging effects that meditation can have on a good number of people – and I imagine they would receive push back from the public – “this has to stop”. When you look at the stats in this article they really are alarming.

    Since then I had another manic episode after a stressful work situation and I haven’t worked in over a year. Thankfully now I am on the right medication which I’ll be on for the rest of my life.

    People who are drawn to meditation are often people who are suffering – and many of those suffering will probably have a mental illness.

    Things that I’ve learned – small goals in meditation practice are good! Big ones – can be v dangerous. Being where I’m at now I reckon if you have to meditate for such long periods what are you really trying to get away from? What stillness can you reach that is more beautiful than watching a bumble bee hovering around flowers? Have you tried committing to a hobby like drawing, fishing or gardening? Something that brings you into the moment in a beautiful way and you can have fun doing it.

  4. Mark Epstein, MD, a psychiatrist and a Buddhist, writes extensively and in detail about this in his book “The Trauma of Everyday Life”. We start meditating, and we believe that we’re going to have peace and happiness — and then the S hits the fan. It’s the No. 1 reason why people don’t stick with meditation. //// The book could have been better written — but it’s still very much worth reading.

  5. I am afraid I don’t buy most of what psychiatrists say, as they know very little about spiritual experiences and the mystical path. Our society so ingrained in materialism does not understand at all that sometimes the person seemingly spiralling downward is actually on route to a greater experience of the light…it is a process that can be facilitated by a real teacher and they are too far few and away…the shamanic journey is similar…before one becomes a healer one is led through suffering and torture…the wounded self…This article talks about people stuck in some parts of their journey because no one was around to help them through who understood that process…to know God or Higher self first requires tests and obviously the people mentioned here did not get appropriate support to pass these tests…it is not meditation that is the problem but lack of understanding and acceptance and appreciation by our society of mystics in general.

  6. I think part of the problem may well be that we have “enlightened” gurus who are self purported as such, run temples of their own, and no one is “minding the store” (so to speak). Because these gurus are picking and choosing what they teach, having limited understanding of their ‘enlightenment’ (based usually on reading Eastern thought, with western misunderstandings and cultural gaps) allows these teacher to ‘put together an ala carte use’ of Eastern philosophies.

    It is almost impossible for a westerner to truly know what Eastern philosophy being used has been corrupted or ‘bastardized’ for western followers. I saw in one of these ‘ashrams’ first hand of how pick and choose practices of Eastern ideals, can result in deaths, psychotic breaks, and abuses of all sorts. Its missing the point to think that a familial history mental illness, or even think that groups that apply these concepts should somehow have the ability to weed out those with mental conditions is the answer. The answer might be for the person themselves to be the caveat emptor to be extremely careful with any group (based on another culture which you were not born into or know enough about) to know what has been corrupted and why. Of course this also includes Christian teachings that pick and choose as well.

    There is something we saw first hand called “zen nodding” that isn’t exactly great either. It’s a big deal to put the practitioner FIRST, not last. This is one reason that in the Bay area, the psychic emergence group existed, to protect the practitioner and help with fall out.

I’m wondering if anyone that has experienced negative effects from meditation has seen a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), i.e. Acupuncturist, Shiatsu Therapist, to work with such effects? When we have imbalances within our energy channels (meridians) we can potentially have stagnation/blockages or excess, therefore not being able to cope with the increased flow of energy from meditation. I’d be surprised if anyone has done a study with treating the negative effects with TCM, which is unfortunate because Acupuncture and Shiatsu Therapy are very successful in treating emotional imbalances.

  8. Try praying (just say out all that is in your heart then confess every negativity you’ve willfully been involved with as long as you can remember. Then say God please forgive these sins and any you can’t remember and promise not to go back to them and end by saying “in Jesus name I pray” ) then study and obey the Holy Bible and see how much your anxiety and depression go away. When you meditate by just letting your mind be blank then anything can fill it up. But when you fill your mind with the word of God, a new life is being birthed in you and you’ll find inner peace. I tried what the Buddhist say about meditation, didn’t work for me. Infact I experienced some of the symptoms described above so I went with what Christians have to say and it worked. Today am free and always at peace with myself no matter what is happening around me

    • I agree with you. Whenever I do yoga, and there is meditation, I focus on a verse from the Bible. To be able to do this we need to study scripture and memorise verses that have meaning for us. Despite serious everyday difficulties and uncertainties I live, for the most part, in a state of bliss in unity with the Creator of the universe/ the ground of being/ dark matter/ God. It is a very practical life. I deliberately cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Emptying your mind is not wise because it leaves space for anything of any sort to enter. Changing our focus away from self towards the Creator is far more effective. Few people are aware of the dangers of the spiritual world because most of us can’t see it with our physical eyes. We can’t see radio waves or tv transmission either – but does that mean they don’t exist? The Bible tells us, ‘In Him (God) we live and move and have our being.’ I think it helps, on many levels, to be aware of our surroundings. Prayer is a conscious connection to the personal aspect of God. The bottom line is that God loves His/ Her creation.

  9. The wife of a Guru long ago chastised his students for trying too hard, too long, too quickly. Why pick a mango before it’s ripe? she asked. I was initiated into Trancendental Meditation in my late teens. My first experience was short, sweet and so peaceful. Subsequent practice varied, sometimes no practice for years. But I’ve always returned to it, in its own time. This article describes a mentally distressed man wanting to be a Buddhist monk “to find peace”. In other words, a means to an end. Meditation should never be a means to an end, better health, wellbeing etc. It should be practiced for its own sake. It is not an extreme sport. Take it easy. It will call you back if you give up for a while, and if it’s right for you.

  10. I really like this. I like how real it is. I like how it gives a genuine look into the potential dark side of meditation. I like how it really vetts it and brings to light some potential side affects. I’ve personally been a long time “meditator”, have attended a couple 10 day silent retreats and have a regular practice. In the beginning it was pretty dogmatic. I thought I had to follow a strict style and do it a very particular way… funny right. Over the years I’ve come to the realization that taking anything too seriously just feeds the beast, fuels the very thing, we are trying to remedy in the first place. All in all, meditation is a fantastic tool for introspection, for self-inquiry, to assess, to understand what we are working with and see if it lines up with who we really want to be.   11. As a lifelong meditator I’m a little surprised by the tone of this article. It’s like a dire warning for all who meditate and I feel that’s a bit extreme. My immediate reaction is to ask were those people alread predisposed to mental health issues? Also, the details of how long they spent in meditation at one sitting is not mentioned. Naturally to spend hours alone meditating is probably not a good idea but regular meditation practice of twenty minutes or so has not been the cause of any harm to anyone that I’ve ever heard of. Quite the contrary. It’s been enormously beneficial. In my own case it helped me fight addiction, increased peace in my life, improved the quality of my relationships, created a greater sense of gratitude and much more. It’s known for it’s ability to even out moods for depressive people, help addicts kick their habit, even promote better physical health. The list goes on. I felt this article focussed on an uncommon side of meditation associated with certain specific circumstances. My guess is that the people involved were already predisposed to that mental health disorder and meditated for unnaturally long periods of time triggering the event.

  12. Many people develop a psychotic mental illness. Some of those people may meditate. People with mental illness are very stressed and may turn to meditation, hoping that it might help, but it doesn’t. Lots of people meditate who never develop mental illness – by far the vast majority. This article offers no proof whatsoever that meditation precipitates or is a causative factor in mental illness. It is much more likely that there is no relationship at all. This is a misleading article about meditation and not worth the time to read it, IMO.

  13. I am very new to this practice . Since i read this I am a bit bothersome to continue meditating. Please someone tell me the proper and safe way to do this.

  14. In my own experience, meditation reveals whatever is already inside of you. Karma has many ways to manifest, and the “dark side” is always there, along with the light.
