On the day before UPLIFT 2014, UPLIFT headquarters received a video message from actor Mark Ruffalo, beaming in from the film set of the next Avengers movie with an invitation to the UPLIFT community to connect, partner and contribute to an inspired global project in service of our planet’s most vital natural resource – WATER.
Water Defense is a non-profit organization founded by Ruffalo, with dedication to the belief that access to clean water is a fundamental human right. Their mission: use technology and public engagement to inform people about what is in their water, hold water polluters accountable and keep our waterways and drinking water sources free from contamination and industrial degradation.
Over the past decade, members of the Water Defense team have been on the front lines of clean-up and investigation of many of the planets worst water disasters and contamination sites, providing vital information to the public when polluters, or governmental agencies fall short or utilize technologies that are outdated. Now they are pioneering an empowering new phase in humanity’s quest to protect and preserve our planet’s water by launching a global community outreach program that will enable people all around the world to access breakthrough technology and testing kits to find out about the health of their own local water while contributing to the development of a dynamic global map of water vitality.
In a time where industrial spills, over population, run-off, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers (to name a few) all impact the health of our water (and therefore our bodies!), the goal of Water Defense is to foster a world-wide water testing initiative that records and tracks water contamination in communities everywhere, giving people the tools to understand and take responsibility for their impact on water.
On the final day of UPLIFT 2014, Chief Scientist of Water Defense Scott Smith, and Colton Chase from the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation Skyped into the main stage to speak with us about their amazing water testing technology and how communities around the world can now work together to create a map which tracks and supports the vitality of our planets waterways.
Here is the video from the inspiring conversation. When you’ve finished watching, take a moment to reach out to Water Defense to become part of this powerful global initiative.
